Beauty Product Reviews

January 6, 2018

When I found out I was pregnant, I promised myself I would never “let myself go” once I became a mom. I saw many moms who used to care about their appearance that seemed to put themselves last when they became a mom. I told myself that I would never do that. HA. All the adorable things I thought before I had a child make me laugh now. I am about seven months in to being a new mom and I haven’t got my hair highlighted in well over a year, I go long stretches without wearing makeup and I severely need a new wardrobe as my body changed and my clothes don’t fit me right. I am a happy mom and a tired mom and to be honest – the last thing I care about most days is how I look. I do wish I had time and energy to care but I just don’t.

One weekend, as I was looking at some photos of my son and I, I noticed how tired my eyes looked. I am still in my 20’s but I don’t feel that way. I do have some confidence and my husband reminds me that he thinks I am beautiful but I was just feeling a little discouraged. How can I gain some of my confidence back without “wasting” time dolling myself up? I don’t want to be spending time applying makeup when I could be watching baby Axel crawl for the first time or tidying up the house or even showing my poor, neglected husband some affection!

That’s when I met Beth. Beth and I met through networking on social media and I swear God sent her to me. She told me all about Maskcara Beauty products and I was intrigued to say the least. What a coincidence that literally in the moments of me feeling insecure I start talking with Beth. She assured me that this makeup was for a minimalist, busy mom on the go. That sounded perfect to me! I was transparent with her and told her I was no expert in makeup application. She shared some great tutorials and resources with me like the one below!

I first met up with Beth to do a color match. She sent me a quiz prior to us meeting and it was ON POINT. I learned that a white peach highlight, ash contour and nude/ruby lips best enhance my skin tone and features. That is one of the main reasons I don’t usually invest too much time or money into makeup is because I have no idea what looks good on me. My skin is fair so I usually try to buy a light foundation but it ends up making me look like a ghost!

The fun part was getting my HAC pack in the mail! HAC meaning “Highlight and Contour”. Their makeup brushes are SO soft and amazing and the compact that it came in is almost as beautiful as the makeup! Don’t get me wrong, I loved my birch box subscriptions but I don’t like a lot of clutter and my bathroom drawers get overwhelmed with product! The Maskcara beauty compact is so small and each product comes in a magnetic insert so it holds the essentials. And can we just take a moment to address how lovely this compact is? They have a few gorgeous options but this is the one I chose. I love the idea that the set you choose is completely customizable to minimize waste. I think back to all the times I bought or received makeup sets that had outrageous colors that I never even touched!

Life with a new baby is demanding to say the least. Some nights are better than others but every so often we have a rough night with a fussy baby. This makes our mornings a bit chaotic when we are tired and trying to everything ready for daycare drop off so we can head to work. We have changed up our routine to do as much preparation as possible the night before so that our mornings don’t feel stressful but baby Axel is unpredictable which is why I only have a few minutes (if any) to do my makeup.

I didn’t really think a few minutes could make any difference, but I was wrong! The first time I used my Maskcara beauty products, I timed myself and it took right around 3 minutes to apply. I was surprised to see what a difference it made yet it was natural and enhanced my features. The product felt good on my skin. It didn’t feel too thick or “cakey” like some products do. I have dry skin, especially in these Wisconsin winters, so the moisture base feels so nice. My husband actually prefers me without makeup but he really liked this look because it didn’t look like I was wearing much at all.

I even got compliments when I wore my new look to work for the first time. One of the guys said I looked “less tired”, HA! Men have such a way with words sometimes but I’ll take it as a compliment. I also was told that I seemed like I was more lively and my co-workers were joking that I must have finally got a good nights sleep. Nope! Same old night shift routine with baby Axel (not complaining because I really do love the night feedings). This makeup is doing wonders if it is making me look well rested when I am not at all. 🙂

I always love hearing how a product or company got started so I checked out what Maskcara was all about before trying them. The founder, Cara, is a foster mom and has a great passion for helping women to see their beauty. Below is her “about me” which I thought was so inspiring to hear. I love when childhood dreams become a reality.

“I’m Cara. I live in Southern Utah with my husband and three boys and one girl. (We’re a foster family!) When I’m not being a mom, I’m a makeup artist, beauty blogger and business owner. I created Maskcara to share my love of beauty. I believe that most women are twice as pretty as they give themselves credit for inside and out, I’m on a mission to change that.

For my 5th grade science project I created a clay mask that form fitted to my face. The idea was you can put the makeup on the mask before bed, then in the morning you’d just smash it to your face and voila! makeup finished! I created it because I figured it afforded me my two favorite things makeup & sleeping in.

It didn’t really work:) but I never gave up on the idea to make makeup easier and more fun.

Even at 11 years old I could tell that there was a problem with the beauty industry. Instead of making women feel more beautiful I saw a tendency to make them feel more insecure, by convincing them they needed more and more products and more and more rules to abide by in order to meet the standard.

I wanted my blog and my products to be different. I wanted to help create an environment and makeup that celebrates every type of natural beauty, that shares simple and useful tips, and to create and share about staple products that can be used by every woman time and time again.

I’m a face connoisseur. It’s almost distracting how much beauty I see in women all day long. Every face I work on inspires me because they each have such unique and stunning features. I’m honestly and truly baffled when they tell me about the flaws that bother them. My goal is to help them see the what I see.

Thanks to so many beautiful, kind and intelligent women who frequent these pages I can say that this has become much more than a company or a blog to me. It is a sisterhood where everyone is welcome!

Thank you so much for being here. You are beautiful.”

Makeup doesn’t make a woman beautiful – her character and confidence does. Makeup is just a way to enhance the unique and lovely features you were born with. For years I hated my nose and a mole on my forehead. Sounds silly, I know. Today, I embrace these features because they are what make me unique. I know I could easily get the mole removed but a while back I realized my mom also had a similar mole so we have an ugly mole bond that I can’t break. 🙂 Instead of looking in the mirror and picking apart the things you hate, focus on the fact that you are a unique and beautiful individual. Embrace the things you call “flaws” and instead call them your “unique features”.

If you are a tired Mama trying to get some confidence back like me then you should give Maskcara products a try. Reach out to my Minnesota neighbor, Beth, if you are interested in these products. She can color match you through a selfie process or you can take the free quiz to see what will enhance your tone and features. Please use party number #17244 when you purchase product. I’m sure you will love this product as much as I do!
